How to run a recoded A box in your M box car
About 8 months ago I bought an M coded chip that turned out to be an A box (recoded to the Hitachi MAF upgrade), which was all sorts of fun in my 2001.5 M box car - ESP didn't work, so neither did ABS. At the time, I didn't think that A box and M box were interchangeable, so I just drove it and went on. I even tried the 06711 recode and that didn't work. (Note: this will come back later in the story.) PS Those lights are annoying...
After doing more STFA (and you guys didn't think that happened anymore) I found that there really isn't any difference in the chips from one box to the other. Yes, the MAF stuff is different, but that's recodeable and so is everything else. In fact, I asked APR at their bbq if making my A box chip work in an M box and they said they were 90% sure it would work.
Fast forward to about two months ago. I contacted Mike @ AWE (since I'm a GIAC customer, it only makes sense) and he was confident that they could program it. I sent it to him, and they worked on it. After all of their testing, it was determined that I just needed to recode my instrument cluster. I tried that and it didn't work, since my 2001.5 was already coded with 1025 instead of 0, and more searching showed that I still needed to recode the engine with the 06711 code. A quick phone call to Mike confirmed that, and after catching an e-mail that Eric sent with the 11463 login code, I went out to the car.
Vagged the car, logged in without any problems, and this time, it let me recode the ECU! I cleared all the engine codes, instrument codes, and ABS codes, but the ABS/ESP lights were still on. Well, crap. I cleared the codes again, and I heard something click behind the dash, and they went away! Sweet!
Anyway, here's what I learned. ECUs have no real differences between them. With proper recoding/programming, you can run an any box in any box. Obviously, MAF programming is key, but everything else can be done with the VAG-COM.
Your cluster can be recoded by going to Instruments, Adaptation, Channel 60, and then using 1025 for ESP or 0 for no ESP.
Your ECU can be recoded by going to Engine, Login (11463), and then 06711 for ESP or 06611 for no ESP.
So, for those of you who want to disable ESP/ABS while on the track, you *should* be able to use the above directions.
My shout-outs:
Eric - Thanks man for all the help, we've only been working on it for 8 months.
Nick Gustas - In the end, you were right. Can I blame you for not telling me the login code, tho? :P
Bobby Clarke - Thanks for letting me use your ECU when I shipped mine off. I'll get it back to you, eventually...
Nyet - Told ya.
Mike @ AWE - Perfect customer support, sir.
Rktskicar - Your post had the login code, so thank you.

Good Job ;)
I'm surprised that the data-bus connection to the ESP is there. Comparing my M-box to my A-box I noted they used different chipsets, did a little research and found they were mostly equivalents... never had any motivation to look further.
Anyhow, good info. I'm going to try this myself just to confirm.

question: if 06611 disables both ESP and ABS on H-box and later cars...
how do you disable ABS only on A/B box cars?
Or can you just pull the ABS fuse in that case?
Also, is there a way to ONLY disable ESP/EDL but not ABS?
