Intercooler BT: best option for SMICs?
#32
SMICs will be popular for now but I have a feeling than FMICs will become the trend
and my reason why is that with people now making silly power with just plain K04s, and the GT kits that will ultimately give us choices between ASPs current GT25R kit, and future 28R and 28RS turbos in the works Any good vertical airflow design FMIC will work better than horizontal or SMICs, and I think one of the major reasons will be boost response. Less piping=more boost response, less heat and more efficiency. When I'm ready to part with my K04s I'm going straight to GT28RS twins, and I'm gonna want decent boost response, because I know I won't have K04-like boost reponse.

for $820 shipped, i most likely will be going with the silva option...
i would love to get the FMIC from autospeed when its ready, but im sure it will be above $1300-1400 when all is said and finished.
for me and my S4, any upgraded ICs will work, and since the quality and performance of the silva are impressive...im heading in that direction.

Reposting this info here..... I lined up the IAT curves from the K04'd cars at EPL....
Go to the original thread to see the differences in these cars which might also contribute to the outcome...
I took this:
<img src="http://www.pramanik.net/AW/EPL/dynocomp_files/Typical-3-27-2006_8-22-40_AM_v2_p0t_vs_p3t_40f_29519_image007.gif">
and scaled each linearly so they have the same temp at 3200 RPMs. That seemed like a good spot to line them up as all curves seemed to exhibit that constant temp for a bit in that area. Now the shapes of the curves are shown in better comparison to each other:
<img src="http://ctny.audiworld.com/mark/s4/misc_data/iat_adjusted_epl_dynoday.jpg">
AWE = Lt Green (Mark's APR)
AWE = Red (Erik's AWE)
RS4 = Lt Blue (Dave's EPL)
RS4 = Dk Green (Andrew's MTM)
RS4 = Dk Blue (Matt's EPL)
The IAT results may be affected by more than just the choice of IC, since every car is running a different setup. Boost levels should certainly be taken into account, which will cause higher IATs.
My observations:
- Lt Green and Red (AWE ICs) are trending together (near identical, even with different software/boost/etc)
- Dk Blue and Lt Blue (RS4 ICs) are trending together.
- Dk Green is the same IC (RS4) as the Lt Blue an Dk Blue, but Dk Green is running much less boost, and likely why it's not trending with the Blues.
- Dk Blue is the only different turbo (K04/Mitsu), and as such may be working differently and may be the cause if it running hotter IATs than Lt Blue, even considering that Lt Blue is running more boost. Dk Blue is getting the hottest the quickest. Perhaps the ICs are poorly flowing (either from exterior restrictions or internal oil), or maybe it's the turbo. I don't think it's due to it running a bit leaner, as all have similar EGTs
- Considering all of the variations, the IAT's still seem to trend differently between the RS4 IC and AWE IC. I'm somewhat surprised to see the difference that exists. Kudos to AWE if these are the same results obtained in a more controlled environment.<ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/s4/msgs/2362683.phtml">https://forums.audiworld.com/s4/msgs/2362683.phtml</a</li></ul>
