Below are the results of my first time Blackstone Oil Analysis. My stock S4 has almost 60k on it, and I've been using Mobil1 0W-40 for about 20K miles now.
![]() First a little background: If you haven't already, check out O.W. Kenobi's post on from his Blackstone Oil Analysis in the summer of 2004 ("In case anyone's wondering how long Mobil 1 0W-40 lasts...") in which he points out that a good oil like Mobil1 0W-40 can last several thousand miles in our engines. In the past, I wasn't uncomfortable going more than 4K or 5K between oil changes, but these sorts of tests are quickly changing my mind. It costs $20 to do the test ($30 with the TBN analysis), and if I can potentially double my mileage between tests, I'll easily come out ahead (cost of test vs cost of oil + filter + time or labor). Next, some comments on my results: I'm still learning how to read everything, but I requested the additional TBN test (+$10) because it helps to determine when additives are still left in the oil and if the interval between changes can be extended. Notes about my results: --This is my daily driver, and I get stuck in traffic here in Atlanta A LOT (probably the reason for the Fuel @ 0.5%) --No track time, no mods; I'm pretty easy on the car and oil temps don't get much above 215F (ambient today was 65F on the way home) --Yes, the make-up is wrong (I actually added nothing). :) Blackstone recommends I extend my use to 5,500. My TBN was 5.3, but I didn't submit any "virgin" oil to get a base reading. I guess I'll save that for another sample analysis. Once I post to BITOG, I'll probably learn a bit more, like what the viscosity signifies. Finally, some additional reading: --Blackstone Homepage --Guide to Reading Test Results --TBN Info & Explanation --O.W. Kenobi's original analysis (AW) --BOBISTHEOILGUY.com is a good discussion forum on oil analysis (aka BITOG) --FixedWing's Mobil One 0W-40, 2000 Audi S4 Analysis (BITOG) --PaJohn's M1 0W40 vs Amsoil 0W30 on my Audi S4 Analysis (BITOG) --funkadelic's '01 Audi S4: Redline 5W-30 vs Mobil 1 0W-40 test results (BITOG) --Goldmbr_DutchDaddy's AMSOIL report @ 7,900 (AW) Edit: Changed subject because it was confusing. 2008 Track days: Mid-Ohio, VIR, Barber
