Re: RNS-E DVD ver. 4B0.. (A6) purchased today!
And the adventure begins.....
Well, I'll be pulling my hair out in no time trying to figure this out. If ANY members out there have any info/help on wiring, DVD's workarounds, etc. I'd really appreciate it. I'll do the same as I progress.

Yes, to a B5 (2000 S4) & thanks, I'm sure I'll be needing your help!
Any insight you have before I get started is appreciated. I'll let you know more when I receive the unit.

I will, don't worrry. I wonder if...
I can connect a portable hard drive to the unit internally via one of the SD slots. No doubt I'd have to dissect it apart, but the thing reads MP3 files off SD cards, why not a HD? Just a thought...I'm getting ahead of myself.

Definitely, looks like I'll be hacking off part of...
the bottom to make it fit. Nymike put a 4B0 Navi+ in his B5, see (https://forums.audiworld.com/a4/msgs/2183766.phtml. He said he just had to trim off part of the bottom. I'm thinking it should be similar, or I'll have to come up with something creative.

There are many problems trying to get it to work with a B5
First off the fit will be close but not perfect. Second the RNS-E has several signals that it expects to see over the CANbus. Car ignition, headlights, speed and reverse signals. Without these signals the unit will not function properly. For instance, without the ignition signal the unit will shut off in about 20 minutes. The newer cars such as the B6 A4 have these signals already. The older ones do not. You will have to find or make a device which will take the older analog signals and turn them into CAN signals.
Thirdly, there are not US maps available. The A8 ones will not work at all. The A8 and new A6 cars use systems made by Becker. The RNS-E units are made by a company called Aisin in Japan.
We actually have a couple units in stock that we are testing and doing development work with. We hope to have the map issue worked out soon. (hopefully)
Our suppliers in German have said that there is only one source to get the CANbus adapter that you will need. Unfortunately, the maker of these is a one man show and only has one prototype.
By the way, we also can get these RNS-E units if anyone is interested. They sell for $2500 and take a few weeks to get in stock.

US B6 cars don't have this data stream in the CAN busses, you can disable this in the headunit
coding. Would be easier to do in a B6 admittingly.
US models with this CAN functionality are: A8, A6(2005), Toureg and the A3 next spring. The allroad has twin K lines which is one of the requirements but I do not know if this is possible in the older platform.
