My full intent was to follow these directions, but it didn't quite go that easy...
The first issue was finding 12point (triple squares) in a short version. Pep Boys had ones that were like 3" of solid whatever, which took a friend a while to hack with a dremel (and then we never got around to doing the filter, and he left with the bit). So I went out today, and tried more to find these, to no avail. My last attempt was with my mechanic at the local Audi dealership. Sure enough he had it, but he said "not to bother as you'll strip out the plastic in the back". Sure enough he was right... The 8mm 12pt bolt goes into a square metal nut. That metal nut is held in place on the back side so it doesn't turn. It's the plastic that holds it in place. From corrosion, when you go to turn the bolt, the square nut starts to turn and digs into the plastic until the nut is turning freely with the bolt, together. Not untightening. (We used a T-40 torx bit on the bolt to turn it.) There's no way to hold the nut in place, to turn the bolt free. So, instead, first remove the lower bango fitting. Then spray the filter with WD40 above the plastic strap such that it runs down between the strap and the filter. Now grab the filter with large channel locks and wiggle it out of the strap (without undoing the bolt). You may want to pry at the plastic piece which covers part of the end of the filter (in the first pic above, you can see it around the bottom of the filter from 6 to 10 o'clock. The filter comes right out. And the new one goes in without too much trouble. I'd suggest spraying the new filter with WD40 as well, which we forgot to. We tapped it in with a wood block and hammer, just be sure not to hammer on the nut/threaded area - do it off to the side. We had doubted the Audi tech at first, but sure enough it went down exactly as he said. It probabaly took us 2 hours, but that was trying these various things - not to mention we had to jack her up again because we had a small leak on the lower fitting. We're gonna do it again on Thursday night on a diff car - I expect that to take less than an hour. Also, a full size towell is needed for the amount of gas. A hand towell is pushing it, unless you had a bucket ready for the gas to pour into. Also, my car is now 1 yr, 9 months old, and has seen two winters in the northeast. Your bolt/nut may or may not be corroded on, depending on how your climate compares. Mark P |
