Default DIY: Make Your own intake!! Z-Flo/Darintake

Okay, here goes a nice write-up for all you cheapies out there (like me!!). I made and installed this in VegasS4's Tip car(with chip, exhaust) Total COST:no more than $60 TOTAL (depending on what you have already)
Materials)i used:
Cone Filter
3"x8" 30 angle pipe
RED HOT BLUE GLUE
Mesh
Fiberglass(only use if you know how)
spraypaint(black-the fastest color)
First off remove your airbox, and cut the hole in the bottom to give you the INFAMOUS Darintake hole!!
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/31487/darintake_hole.jpg">
I happen to have some mesh lying around(always!)
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/31487/intake_mesh.jpg">
Shape it and Fiberglass it to the box
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/31487/mesh_done.jpg">
since you done see the hole no need to sand the fiberglass or make it look real neat, jus tmake sure nothing is sticking out too far to interfere with installation.. Put a quick bit of spray paint on there, and BAM your set!!
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/31487/paint_pipe.jpg">
Here is the bottom box installed with hole and mesh!
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/31487/hole_intstalled.jpg">
Okay go to a Muffler shop (ask S4MadMan for location if you are unsure) Get a 3" pipe 8"long and have them bend it to 30degrees!!!When you get home you may have take a mallet and round out the ends to make round them...the bender may make them a little out of round, this is real easy to do don't worry!(should cost NOMORE than $20)
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/31487/30anglle.jpg">
Pick your self up a nice cone filter. Get one that can suck air from the top(because of the hole you made) It needs to have a 3" opening. This is one from pepboys ($30 retail, those going IGT this is gonna cost ya an extra $30 or so)
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/31487/folter_pipe.jpg">
Remove filter and take pipe and insert it into the hole in the top of your airbox and check the angle, so you know how to put it in. You need to buy some sealant. Go to Home Depot and get RED HOT BLUE GLUE(its in the pvc section)...This stuff is nasty but the damndest sealant ive ever seen... This stuff gives you 30 seconds so make sure you got your angle down.(also note that the pipe should stick through the hole about an 1/8th of an inch so it meets directly with the screen of the maf!!!) Also when you line your angle up put the filter on and make sure it fits in your box how you want... Now smear that sealent on the end of the tube adn shove it up there (most likely you will have gaps, no worries) Hold it there for 30 seconds then set aside and let dry for 10 minutes. Use silicone to fill the gaps you have from top and bottom(by all means go as crazy with silicone as you like on the inside of the box)
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/31487/all_done.jpg">
Here is a Vag log of G/S before and after the intake and hole.(tip car) These logs were taken in 68degree weather. stop-120mph, no launch!
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/31487/intakegsgain.jpg">
Boost logs, for some reason teh spikes are gone with it, shifts smoother...maybe someone else would know the reason. But noticable difference none the less
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/31487/boostcompintake.jpg">
Any one tell me what you think?!?
And would someone repost this for morning crew Sun and Mon I will be busy!
Thanks

Maybe the decreased pressure drop influences less boost spikes.

Default as far as which filter...i have not done tests with various filters

an ITG filter can be purchased from
http://www.parts123.com/PartFrame.asp?ZTM=cadeghda&amp;GHOME=www.coastfab. com&amp;TITLE=Coast_Fab
also you are gonna have to verify, because i think ITG has an aluminum female position at the end... if this is the case, make your pipe around 6inches or so and go to Home Depot and go to the plumbing section and get a 3"-3" adapter (they are short, good quality and cost maybe $2-3)

Default Just letting in colder air thru the bottom of the box

will increase the g/s. The reason your your spikes dropped off is because colder air causes a slight pressure drop after the turbos and your reading those levels at the boost sensor.
