I can't argue with the rest of what you said. But, let me see whether I got this straight:
It seems, the heat soaked run with higher boost, but equal air mass flow, should have had the higher tendency for pinging. Did the timing pull back, thus causing a heat soak power loss?
Well, it's a little hard to visualize your test scenario from afar. Don't waste your time explaining, unless you feel like it. :-)
