    No - making the wheels *heavier* can aid fuel economy

    Once all of that mass is spinning, it doesn't want to stop. Once you're up to speed, this will make the car harder to stop, and this helps fuel economy (once you're moving). As you can see, changing the weight goes both ways.

    The biggest danger of a manufacturer making lightweight wheels is them bending or breaking. This is probably the main reason OE wheels are heavy (besides cost).
