Yet Another - Name this noise thread - sorry
So, I've stfa for a while and I think that i've got this narrowed down but I'd appreciate any help from the resident experts here...
2001.5 B5 S4 - 71K miles
New tires, alignment is done and good. Everything was smooth and quiet for a while - 1000 miles.
About a month ago I noticed a cabin "buzz" eminating from the rear (I think). I checked for anything loose in the trunk, exhaust, license plate, etc. Nothing. The "buzz" is most noticable on city streets from about 20 - 50 mph. On the freeway I don't hear it. The radio can also drown it out.
Lately (last week or so) the "buzz" is more noticable and there seems to be a "growl" from the rear end - most noticable while slowing down. The brakes are fine all the way around.
The last clue I have is that when I steer slightly left (lane change or lane correction, the noise disappears for a second.
It's REALLY annoying.
I'm thinking wheel bearing or maybe CV joint...
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
TIA

If it goes away when you steer it is most likely a rear wheel bearing. Also, if it keeps getting worse and more annoying like mine did. At least you asked the forum, I took mine in thinking that the tires were severely cupped and was lucky the technician knew his stuff. He turned me away gently and I got the bearing fixed instead. Good luck.
