Default what will i be getting myself into with a b5 S4?

longtime audi guy who had a b5 1.8tq sport, and now, a b7 a4 2.0t avant. i'm looking into a 2001.5 b5 with 48K miles as a second car. i've always wanted an s4 and i've got the wife's blessing to pick one up. i only have a casual knowledge about the s4s, so i'm hoping to tap into the collective noggin of the b5 s4 crowd to shed a little light on what to expect, costs of the major repairs. any info and advice would be really appreciated. thanks a ton in advance.

Default everyone bish's and complain's, but its really not bad

and if it was, then why are we all still here??

Obviously its a lovely love/hate.

Plan to do the ko4's, plan to do clutch, and maybe even a trans rebuild...

plan to be a DIY'er, or just dont even bother with buying the car.

Default 2nd, some comments here will drive you nuts

My car has been bullet proof...75k with just regular maintenance and me keeping an eye on things.

Bottom line use your head.

Owning a performance car does require common car knowledge and a understanding of the vehicle and how it works.

Default I think they are very reliable cars that WILL break down at some point

I bought my car at 50k miles and beat on it for 16k miles before having a single problem (my clutch pressure plate suddenly failed about a month ago). I replaced the clutch myself with an RS4 unit and all is well during the break-in so far.

They are very reliable but the turbos or clutch will eventually go... So if you buy one, enjoy it, and drive it as hard as you like, but make sure you've got about $5k squirreled away and a AAA membership just in case. I'd wholeheartedly recommend an S4 to anyone who is interested.

Default as long you have a 2nd other car you can rely on, then go for it..

thats my philosphy at least, have a 2nd car for when its time to "fix ****"...it will eventually need some expensive repairs, and they can be a bit time consuming. It's more of a hobby then a car. :P But gawdamn you gotta love these cars!

Default Very true! If you can DIY, and you have another DD.. this car is perfect.. all you need is

a back up of $3,000.

Honestly, I dont see anything needing to be over 2k. Soooooo many people that own these cars are enthusiast, and their is not out there that you can find on the forums..

Even if you can do it yourself.. Buy a 24 case of beer, and have a cookout at your house for the local region guys and have someone else do it for you, lol. Or help you with it.

This is a very enthused group that loves working on these things as much as they say they dont. Its a great family to be apart of!!
