What size (allen) hex head socket to remove axle?

BTW, some (A4s at least) have a different sized bolt...

as noted here....
"Step One is to remove the axle collar bolt. This is a 17mm Allen bolt on newer cars, on older cars, it's a 24mm NUT."

and getting the torque spec is equally as hard...
I think it's something like "80ft-lbs + 180deg".
that 180deg is near impossible - of course I didn't have a 4 foot bar like in that other pic

Only place I could find one that size was snap-on. However the replacement bolt required a 27mm or 1 1/16" hex socket.
FYI if you are going to remove/replace it, make sure to have a long a$$ breaker bar. I needed a 2 foot one with a 1 ft piece of pipe to get it off, and to tighten the new one back on.
Also watch the bolt that holds the upper control arms in place. (If you take it out) Mine was rusted solid as well as a friends. He beat his out after removing the entier steering nuckle. I used a 7-ton puller and a small sledge.
