Vehicle Speed Sensor not working? Where to get one?

Re: FYI, replaced VSS and problem is fixed, a few notes about the job...
I did this same job myself yesterday (didn't replace the sensor - just took it out, checked it and wiped it down). I didn't run into any of your problems. I just unbolted the coolant tank at the top of the engine and accessed the sensor down past the motor. I had it out in seconds.
Evidently your motor has some sort of heat shield over the drive flange? What purpose would that serve?
Mine is a 2000 model 1.8t quattro manual, btw.
And another thing - looks as if this hasn't solved the problem, although the speedo is now misbehaving in an altogether different manner!
