Default EPC light on the cluster, a 'limp mode' of sorts....

if one of the potentiometers on the pedal assembly goes, throttle input should stay pretty normal as the other one will take over - if the actual throttle body goes the car will go into an emergency mode to allow you to get to a safe location to stop. its all in the 2.7T SSP.

Does it give any symptoms of failing?

Default Yes, flashing epc light and crappy throttle response like he said.

If you have VAG you can check the % of each pot in the gas pedal. They're inverted, as in one is 100% while the other is 0% and vice versa. Although you rarely see 100 and 0 for actual numbers. Check that first before you drop big bucks on a throttle body.
