Old 93 octane or 91 octane program?
I am pretty sure the original chipped APR program was designed for 91 not 93 octane, and it indeed ran like crap on Cali gas. The new 91 octane program is much smoother (H box) than the old one and the 93 octane is really impressive.

OP, as stated by others, should you lease a 2018 S4, use only premium fuel. The engine was designed for 91 plus octane. it's where you will get the best fuel economy (driving style aside) and power.
For my S4, I've only used Shell V-power (93 octane). The cost delta between regular and premium in my area is .34 cents. On average I use 10 gallons of gas. Less than the cost of a cup of coffee at your local premium shop.
Most vehicles with forced induction engines that make respectable HP and torque will require premium fuel.
