Prepurchase questions
Just a couple questions as im very, very new to this Audi world. I know I want an s4 though and im pretty sure the B5 was built for me. Seems like the new S4s went from classy sports car to panzar tank, using authentic german metals from recycled tanks.
If im correct the B5 is the Bi-turbo V6 version which means.
- Cheaper Power.
- 3200 lbs vs 3800 lbs of panzar steel.
- Benefit of stock turbo means less expensive FI process, which equals a happy wallet.
Other rumors ive heard.
- '01.5 is the best year becasue of a facelift/mid year changes done to the B5 addressing many common problems.
- 100k your turbos should be blown soon.
- The autos will fail. Based on how I drive and that im trying to get 400 hp out of it.
How hard will it be to find a naogro(sp) Blue S4 for under 8-9K??
And with these cars is there a mileage number that generally is the point where a lot of maintience is required. Im mostly concerned about future problems. I know the K03s are supposed to go or something around 100K but i figure ill upgrade to something garret or 911 turbos when it happens. So thats not that bad. But are there any other major things that I should look out for?

I agree with the "B5 S4 was buil for me." I just bought my first B5 S4 Avant, back in June, and I had it checked out before I considered buying it. When buying from an individual, and being up front about that, and they have no problem with it, that's usually a good sign.
I also intentionally went for a higher mileage car, that had recently had the timing belt service done, which is very expensive($2k is an approximate dealer price.) The TB service interval recommendation ranges from 70-100k, or so. Mine was done at 70k, and I bought the car with 86k miles.
The shopw which did the check out told me about everything that was wrong, and what to expect in the future, and so far they have been correct. The main thing I wanted to know from them about the car was, "is it ok to fly out to Salt Lake City tomorrow, and drive it back to Atlanta?" They said "Yes, without a doubt." I had no issues on my trip home, and have been very happy since.
Just be aware that parts are pretty expensive, and it can be expensive labor too, depending on what needs to be done, if you don't do it yourself. And there are certain parts that are on this car alone, so those can be expensive too. Things like the EGT sensors, not a whole lot of other cars, other than other 2.7T cars(A6, Allroad) use them, so they are expensive to replace, about $4-500, for the pair.
Just be educated, before buying, and have it checked out by a shop that knows B5 S4s, and then go for it, if you get a good check out, and the price is right.

I can do alot of labor myself so that should cut the costs of everything by alot.
I deffinatly want to get a good car and would be willing to hop on a plane and drive it home.

A local Audi specialist & I just had a conversation about A4/S4 with miles & we agreeed that these cars go thru most of the usual items at 75K to 140K miles. So if you want to go low get 60k & under but dont be afriad of a higher mileage enthusiast owned car that has had "everything" replaced.

If you need someone to go look at that car for you, I'm not too far away and might be able to do it.
