Default Messed up a headlight trying to polish as per FAQ. Help please! (xpost from A4 forum)

Help! What on earth did I do wrong?

I used 400, 600, and 1500, lots of water, took my time, then #7 polishing compound in a drill with a buffer. Did I sand too hard? I was neither bearing down nor being ultra-gentle, just sorta what felt right.

Default I never did this, but maybe try wet sanding with 2000 and then polishing again. Try a different

compound, a finer one with less cutting action. Maybe your drill polisher does not work the same way a porter cable does? I dont know, just suggestions, but those swirls should polish out with the right gear.

Also i saw a post a while back about some guy who refinished headlights like that but he spay clear coat over them and they looked brand new after. So if all else fails maybe have someone spray some clear coat and wetsand/polish that.

Default Agreed...

Try finishing it off with the 2000grit wet sand before polishing. I used a 400 (dry), 600, 800, 1200, 1500, and a 2000...grit sandpaper, finished it off with some Meguairs PLastX polish applied with my PC, and they came out looking new...

Default Can't tell what went wrong from the pic. Clear coat is your friend...

it will make the job last MUCH longer. Otherwise, they will yellow rather quickly.

I have done several sets and didn't go above 400 with sand paper. I used some red then white 3M scotch brite with polishing compound then some Zymol.

I haven't tried the clear coat yet but will do so the next time. There was a post recently in the TT(?) forum where a guy paid $100 or so to get them done.

If you have ever polished metal with your buffer, it won't do a perfect job on plastic.

Sand finer, to 2000 grit. Or use a DA polished and a rubbing compound (e.g. 3M Perfect It).
