Default Help on a DTC - is this a "broken" MAF?

16486 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70): Signal too Low

Background is my MAF popped off the air box and I ran around for 2 days before I figured it out. I hooked it back up and reset the codes. But it immediately came back.

Did driving around with out filered air destroy the MAF?

BTW, the code when the MAF was popped off was the same.

Default I've had slowly failing MAF's...

I've replaced at least two - this one has lasted the longest.

I recall the codes were fuel issues as opposed to simple low readings. That's why I wonder if the failure mechanism is different - i.e. damage as opposed to slow wear out.
