can anyone tell me more about the "plastic cups"( the mechanic phrased it )that link axel to tranny?

Thats what I thougt, but i think he was talking about the other side? I know nothing about driveline
but it seemed he was blaming a defective axel (it was replaced a week ago)

cv meaning continuous velocity? can the tranny get damaged if the inner joint fails?
there was some harsh clicking as a result, and while my buddy was driving behind me to the shop he noticed a piece of flat black plastic fly out from under the car.

I'm not sure about the "plastic" portion, but I think he is referring to the CV joint's internals.
