For a design that is essentially 8 years newer than the B5 it's pretty boring.
And now that it's 25% more expensive than the B5 S4 it ceases to inspire IMO.
Anyone?

B5 body style was introduced in 1996 in the U.S.
I *think* it may have been a year earlier in Europe. Granted, there wasn't an S4 in 1996...but the same basic style has been around that long.

I thankfully have no desire at all to have the new S4
it's too expensive, and gives no compelling reason for me to get out of my S4. I expected them to perform a lot better than they do after having had the V8 crammed in there. They marginally underperform relative to the E46 M3, which is a disappointing benchmark. They also are not that attractive looking. They look like A4s with body kits.

I agree. 1700 of it is tax because the EPA couldnt keep their foot off the gas...
I don't blaime them, but I find it very hard to believe that the automatic is so much better on fuel economy. This is just a freebee the epa gave to the gov in terms of tax collection.
The V8 isnt bad it brings a certain level of reliability. The fact that they churn out so many of those engines (though this one is different since its chain driven) should bring the overall cost down. The base price should be around 40-41; and then go up from there for options.

I really like the new S4, but the pricetag would make me consider something else.
If I were buying new today, I'd probably go with a Volvo S60R, but I haven't driven one, so I couldn't tell you. I've always liked Volvos, and that electronic suspension system is killer. Plus, AFAIK, the price is right where the B5 S4 sold for new. I wonder how the interior stacks up against Audi, though.
Although I like BMW and MB, they're priced outside of my comfort range for the car that I'd want from them.
