Default MMI restart while driving

Has anyone experienced the MMI software going out (black screen) on the dashboard and monitor while driving? It is almost like a restart, because it resets and comes back after a couple minutes. The radio, navigation, etc. all go out. I have experienced it only a couple of times now. 2019 S4 with 7K miles. I'm due for my first oil change in a month, so I plan to bring it up at the dealer too.

Only once. Usually it locks up and I have to reset it manually.

Mine did it not too long ago but I thought it was a dimming feature malfunction and I touched the screen to get it to come back on. Didn't appear to me like a reboot of any kind.

That's the symptom of a hung system. These embedded systems have something called a watchdog. It's basically a timer that has to be periodically reset by the system to signal that it is still alive. If the systems hangs for whatever reason, it fails to reset the watchdog timer and once the timer runs out it initiates a hardware reboot. It's found in many appliances, embedded devices etc. as a way to recover automatically from a freeze event due to bugs, overheating or other potential hardware issues. If it happens frequently then you may have a hardware issue or something. An occasional freeze is I would say normal as there can always be bugs that in specific situations could potentially hang the system. Ideally, they are all found during testing, but the reality is some slip through, hence the watchdog to recover from such an event.

Happens way too often on my 2018 S4. It's annoying to say the least.

Happens to me still today. They replaced my system and the issue is still there. I don't think Audi really knows what the issue is at times.

for my 2019 s4 ive had both the mmi and the virtual cockpit go completely out a couple of times while driving. dealer said its a known issue requiring a yet to be released firmware update. its only happened when i have the map up on the left side of the virtual cockpit.

Yup my is a 2019 S4 also. I would give a call to Audi USA. My car is in the process of being reviewed to be replaced or not. I have other issues going on that came up over time.

Default Same here!

The MMI would reboot within the first 3 minutes of starting! It could be once a day or more if I have more trips. It may work perfectly for maybe a week and here we go again! The dealership found no code and did not 'experience my complaint' when they test drove it. They accepted my payment for their $1K service, I think they call it 40K major service and I drive away and the **** happens again! Two weeks later MMI restarted every 5 minutes FOUR TIMES during my drive home! The next morning I told them they have to figure this out - they did! Said they were advised by AoA that a certain software (mumbo jumbo) update helps in 90% of the cases.

I've had it back for just five days and no problems!
