Default Winter Wheel and tires

Need some input, I was looking on tirerack and put together a tire and wheel package for my 2012 S4. I was thinking of going with the 18x8 ASA AR1 Black w/Mach Lip on 245/40ZR18 XL Continental ExtremeContact DWS Blackwall tires. Package comes to $1400, don't know if anyone has these wheels or tires but any feedback would help. Thanks!

I don't have much input on your particular choice, but I have the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3s and they are fantastic. They are a bit noisier than summer tires, but are great in rain and very competent in dry. Haven't had more than just slushy type snow, but being winter tires I'm not worried about snow traction at all.

If you're going to the expense of a winter set, buy winter tires (not all seasons). Just my .02

We've got the Conti DWS on one of our cars. I would not want to rely upon them as a "snow" tire unless you're driving in N Carolina or equiv. as Goony hints at. I drove our car for the first time last week in a little snow and was not terribly impressed. The car could not make it up our driveway with the DWS.

Mac, if you live in an area that gets any sort of snow/ice, look at the Conti snow tire. It's very good given its price point.

FWIW, I was looking at a recent edition of Consumers Distort last night and the top two snow tires were Mich Xice Xi3 and the Xice Xi2.

I think they rated some "all season" tires, too. Don't recall the results.

The Xice are aggressive winter "studless" tires. I went with a more "performance" oriented snow with the Hankook Icept for the S4. I previously had Michelin Pilot Alpins on my S60R and they were great in both the dry cold and snow.

I've been running the Xice2's for the past few winters. They're very impressive "full" winters as opposed to an Alpin which have their purpose but just don't have the same performance in thick white stuff. I can only assume the 3's are another step forward.

I agree about the Conti Extreme Winter Contact. I have a new set on another car and I've been really impressed so far. Do they come in an 18" though? I didn't see it offered.

just got a set of Hankook iPike W409's in 225-50-17

super sticky, good on ice and not too noisy. Running them as 17s makes the ride a little soft, but i'd rather have winter safety over sporty performance in the winter
