Why the desire for manual?

IMHO, there is a BIG difference between driving a MT and a Manumatic. Although I have never driven an S4 with a DSG trans, I have driven a E90 M3 with the DCT trans. Shifts were instantaneous. IF I were to be interested in tracking the car or drag racing it, the DSG/DCT trans would definitely be my choice. If my wife was going to be driving the car and not happy with a MT, then the DSG/DCF trans would again be my choice. But for pure driving experience, and the feel of being connected to the car, the 6Mt is the way to go. I don't really care if the DGS is a smidgen faster. It makes no difference on the street. With a DSG, you cannot get the car to shift at an rpm any higher than 6800rpms and with later model unite even less. I can shift my 6Mt at 7200 rpms if I choose. Also, WITH A REV LIMITER, I have no concerns about over revving the engine .

Thankfully my wife has no complaints about manual. The only car she ever bought herself was a WRX wagon manual.
I accept that the feeling of acceleration is as good on the manual.
I would enjoy the manual more most of the time but hate it in traffic.
It is a tough choice. I am considering manual now more than before.

Well said DrGP! I love my S4 as much today as the day I bought it. The connection one feels with a well done manual transmission performance car is just amazing. The S4 doesn't disappoint at all! I have driven the DSG S4 multiple times and had one as a loaner one time. It is fun, but having always driven manual transmission cars, I know I would be bored after a couple years. Who knows, if the B9 S4 is only available with a DSG, I might become a convert!
