I'm at about 4400 miles and was originally planning to have my 5k service in mid-June (I took delivery June 18). I've got a short road trip (~350 miles round trip) planned for early June. I called for an appointment to have the t-stat done and the dealer wants to do both next Friday.

My question - is there any reason I would want to wait the additional 4 weeks for the service (puts me right at 1 year/5k miles)? If I waited for the service, whats the real risk in having a t-stat issue (seems like nobody has actually had a failure) in that time? Its obviously easier to have everything done at once but given the road trip I'm leaning toward piece of mind. What say ye?

Based on his write-up, it sounds like a pretty serious problem. You're probably better off to get it fixed before your trip.

A few people have had it happen, I was able to document what I did to mitigate being stranded and share that. I know NickS and several others have had their fail as well.

Aw, crap. Sorry to hear that, Neal. I was away for the last couple of weeks and missed all the drama. I just saw the few recall threads but didn't get to the older stuff yet. Sounds like a replacement before my trip is in order. Would you do the 5k service at the same time or wait the extra month?

You are close enough to 5K miles and if you did not have your oil changed since you took delivery almost a year ago, I would have them both done at the same time. IMO, T-Stat is a must before your trip and you should change the oil at least once a year regardless of usage.

Agreed. I didn't have my water pump ever fail, they did it at my 15K service, and with 19.5K on my car, I felt that the T-stat would likely have already happened if it was going to, then literally 5 days later, BOOM. I'd get it done sooner than later.

My car feels slower after the thermostat replacement. With the ESP off, from a dead stop, I can't even get my all seasons to screach. I hope everything was put back OK, especially the supercharger. Maybe the warmer air effect on the supercharger has something to do with it or it's psychological. Even so, I don't know how to solve it. This is one of the reasons I like testing my car at the 1/4 strip. It's good to have a base line before anything changes. I am kicking myself for not doing so. I suppose I could still test it out. If I run mid to high 13's, it's a goner.
