OP, there were several dads who were on the M5 boards one evening a few years back as an obviously younger member was inquiring how to use the car's launch controls. Most of the posters were advising the kid not to try it. So you can imagine the horror when the kid went silent and this story emerged the next morning: http://www.ocala.com/article/20080127/NEWS/801270355
As a dad, you don't forget days like that.

It's nice of you to get him a car at all. I had to pay for my own car when I was 16. 12 years later, I have my S4 - earned of my own effort and that much sweeter as a result.
Don't turn your son into SLR guy...or worse. Teenage boys are dumb, and even dumber in the presence of a skirt.

I can only assume you got to where you are through hard work and dedication. Teaching that lesson at a young age is incredibly important. The deal I have with my son, who is 9, is that whatever he saves for a car, I will match, with no ceiling.
They need to learn to appreciate what it takes for the big purchases in life instead of just having something delivered to their driveway with a hug. They wont treat it with respect and appreciation if they did nothing to earn it.

here's an analogy. i fly as a hobby. if i had been put into an F-18 fighter jet right after i got my private pilots license in a single engine cessna 150, i would have probably killed myself. I learned the basics and developed my skills on slower, smaller planes and worked my way up to bigger and faster ones.
as a new driver on the road, getting a sports car from the start is asking for trouble. learn to drive and get some experience first in a non-sport car for a few years first before upgrading. he's got his whole life to play with fun cars. learn the basic rules of the road first!
