No. The "W" is used to describe how the oil acts when "cold". So, a 0W will be a bit thinner when cold than a 5W, 10W etc. Therefore, in winter driving like in Canada Mobile 1 OW-40 might be a better choice but once the oil is up to temp the "40" takes over on how the oil acts so at that point it doesn't matter. Make sense? If I were in a colder climate I would use Mobile 1 OW-40 European Formula all of the time...I'm in the southern U.S. and I actually use it all of the time too...bottom line the only thing that matters is that it meets VW 502 00 standards which it does; as do many other oils.

It's also Porsche approved, and I used it in the 911.

My dealer uses Castrol Edge 5/40 and Blackstone analysis has been good........running 5K intervals (I am a low mileage driver).

This is what I'm running. I just sent in a 5k mile sample to Blackstone for analysis but didn't change the oil. I plan to send in another sample at 7.5k and one at 10k when I change it (assuming there's nothing in the analyses that suggests I need to change it sooner). FWIW, I changed the factory oil at 5k and the oil from the free dealer change at 5k. I have oil analyses from those two changes as well.

Very interesting Stereodude.

For as long as I can remember, Mobil 1 was my oil. Still a fantastic oil, but I started reading different analysis results online and switched.

Anything stand out when looking at the analysis for the factory oil, compared to the dealer oil, and then the first fill with the Pennzoil Euro at the 5000 mile mark?

I haven't gotten the Pennzoil analysis back yet, so I'm not sure. The factory fill is obviously heavily affected by break in.

Thank you for posting the results Stereodude. As indicated, your oil analysis looks very good.

Two things surprised me a bit...

1) The iron ppm was a higher (by a small amount) on the second (dealer) oil

2) All of the oil viscosities were low, in the 30 weight range rather than 40 weight, particularly with the dealer oil.

Results show our engines are indeed still breaking in after 10,000 miles.

Sharing your knowledge and experience are much appreciated.
