So the dealer tweeked some electronics and now I'm to drive it for 1000km and take it back, they'll see how much oil was used and feed back to Audi. They said worse case is it could be dodgy piston rings, if so they'll replace under warranty. We shall see...

use good oil not Castrol like they put in the dealer , all my cars use motul and neither one burns oil. my neighbors started using it after the second oil change no more adding.
liquid moly is another good option.

Any oil you put the car should follow the VW 502 00 approval, which should be marked on the oil container. Link here

and here

The Mobil 1 W-40 European Car formula meets the requirements.

I've done an oil analysis on each oil change and tested several oils. Go to the "bob is the oil guy" forum and you will see thousands of comments around oil analysis.

After testing oils from Castrol (dealership oil change and German Castrol), Amsoil and pennzoil ultra euro my personal analysis tells me the pennzoil performs the best. It's not easy to find. I get mine from amazon.

I second iflywoe's comments.

My pre-owned 2012 A5 went through a litre of oil in about 8000 KM. This works out to about 0.15L/1000KM. The car was bought from a dealer which had all fluid levels changed/topped up. I can only assume the dealer used the usual Castrol oil variety. I didn't get the low oil level warning but I monitored the digital oil level readout and it was consistent in decrementing every ~1000 KM until it was empty.

I did a full oil change and I used Motul 8100 x-cess 5w40. So far after 3300 KM, I'm still reading full on the digital readout. Fingers crossed ....

My 2010 S4 loses much more oil than the comments I'm reading on the forum. Since I've bought the car, I've needed to add a qt. every 3-400 miles. Both my personal mechanic and the Audi dealership told me this extremely high level of consumption was "normal" and if I checked the internet, I would see many owners with the same results. I'm definitely a noob to this forum and Audi cars, but that seems like a lot of oil to me.

Anything above 1 qt/1200 miles is considered above acceptable limits by Audi. If the car was broken in correctly(not like Audi recommends) and the piston rings seated TOTALLY, many, including myself have had ZERO oil consumption. BUT my 3rd 2011 S4 with 66K miles does use some oil. I bought it used so I have no idea how the engine was broken in or driven prior to me taking possession. One thing that will cause oil consumption is a bad PCV valve. This is a known problem with these cars. In fact, I believe that is the cause of my oil consumption. But in your case, that much oil consumption would seem to point toward something more serious. I would guess a broken piston ring or 2?

My 2016 S4 appears to use nearly no oil so far at almost 6k miles (If the dash gauge display is accurate). I don't push RPMs often or long, so that may help.

My old Audi uses a 1/2 quart about 3-400 miles. It has 155k miles on it. despite attempts to plug up the gaskets/seals, it leaks a lot. Cardboard under the engine in the garage is an easy gauge.

Using oil at a rate much greater than 1200 miles per quart reminds me of an old BMW I owned (new) that used a bit more (about a quart about every 900 miles IIRC). They said it was 'normal' (a "loosely built engine") , and proved to be, and it was OK for me. It ran great to 165k miles before it met a garbage truck...but modern engines are usually much tighter.

(Randycamp) I can't recall any car I've owned that used that much oil, without a serious engine issue. I'd be surprised if your consumption is 'common' or healthy, but...
