Extended warranty
#11
Check with your credit union or bank. I know USAA offers an extended warranty that is better or atleast as good as the dealer can offer for much cheaper. My coworker got extended on his for something like 150 bucks where as the dealer was wanting to charge him 600 dollars or more.

As my mechanic told me they don't sell you extended warranties to save you money they sell them to make money. One factor is how fast you burn miles. I put 25,000 per year so spending roughly 6K for two years, i.e. if you are covered up through 100,000 wasn't worth it for me personally. However I did have transmission issues which cost me 2k, at 77,000 miles so i have 4k in the bank still, only time roughly another 12 months, will tell if I made the right choice.

I just picked up a 3yr/36k mile powertrain warranty from my dealer for $1425. So deals are possible and this is after I was quoted $2800 from the same dealer for the same warranty. I honestly struggled while wondering if I should get the warranty as I always figure these things aren't generally worht it. In this case the warranty can be transferred, and it is prorated if cancelled.

Thanks for the replies --- Still ambivalent
Thank you for all the anecdotes & observatons thus far.
While I'm leaning more toward adding a couple of years extended powertrain, I'm still undecided. I hear the "everything is fine @ 94K" & also the "I would not have a German car not covered by warranty." My initial quotes from the local dealer are $2536 for a 2 yr/24K; $3020 for a 36K. I have not tried Fidelity directly as yet.

I was leaning towards buying a new S4, to also be able to get an extended warranty... but after visiting CarMax this weekend and asking a few questions about their warranty, I'm going to just wait for the right "lightly" used 13+ S4 to show up in their system.
You can get a 7-year/125K warranty, which covers damn near everything on the car (except wear and tear items) for $2600 or so, with a $200 deductible. That is awesome, and the price is just SO MUCH less than anything you could get from the dealer. I've had a few friends that had the CarMax warranty, and stuff was fixed without issues. You can even use an authorized Audi dealer or service center to make the repairs!
Anybody had any experience with it themselves?

Can't offer any experience about US warranties, but my German extended warranty (from Audi, a simple continuation of the manufacturer's 2 year warranty) paid for itself several times over within two months of the 2 year warranty running out.
The whole MMI died; the $4,700 repair was carried out for free
I should add: not generally a fan of extended warranties as I prefer to self-insure, but I figured that $950 for an extra 3 years / 30,000 miles was a reasonable punt.
