Decisions about which S4 to buy. Help!
I will be in the market soon (next 2 months) to purchase a used S4 (B8 platform) I would like to know if there are certain models within the years 2012-2016 I should stay away from or which ones would be preferred to purchase. I live in Denver so this vehicle makes the most sense to me. I have had two BMW's in the past and currently lease a 2017 VW GTI. Any feedback would be appreciated. I look forward to becoming an Audi owner.

The 2012 B8 and earlier are susceptible to issues with the thermostat, water pump and mechatronics transmission unit. Check maintenance records to see if those have been addressed. The 2013 and later B8.5 have been pretty reliable.

Do not do it!! I always wanted an S4, currently own a 2013 S4 Prestige, full loaded w/ sport differential. Had it for almost 4 years just hit 115,000 Km extended warranty expired at 100k.. car has been nothing but problems since it hit a 110k.. And all maintenance has been done, up to date and even oil changes done every 5k.
- Thermostat
- Front suspension
- Water Pump
- Machatronic malfunction
- And just got a call telling me that another transmission problem has arised after the repair and after 2-3 weeks Audi tech’s have determined that I need a new transmission.
Never again!

Does anyone know how common tranny problems are? Are they in specific years or all DSGs?
I know Audi changed trans fluid toi earlier mileage for some years.
I have seen problems mentioned on fora before...

There were two revisions of the dsg. 12's and early 13's have the first revision and later 13's and up have the second. The first revision was better than the original and the second was better than the first. If you search, you'll find plenty of info.
