It would depend on price, how you intend to use the car, how many miles/yr, and how long you expect to keep the car. I would also expect that you could get some type of warranty on the STIs

STI ... As much as I like my Audi, you're in for a world of pain if you buy an S4 with 95k miles on it compared to the newer STI.

Plus Subies are pretty good cars. I was looking at a Legacy 2.5 GT Spec B when I went with the S4.

Seemed to be overly gizmo oriented for me and I hated the stearing. Too much understear for me. It looks better in person though. Power was good, but some of them have gernaded engines due to to running lean. Maybe thats fixed now.
I got my 05 S4 CPO with 38K miles for 29K in July. I don't regret getting it over a new STi. I also test drove a new Nismo Z, R32, and Bullitt Mustang.
