Default Valve Cover Replaced

Valve cover gasket leak was found during 45k service. Tech said the paint inside the covers was bubbling. They replace the covers with plastic covers. I believe the original were metal, are they? Is this standard practice for valve covers to replace with plastic ones? Replaced uder warranty.
Thx

Happened to mine too on its final free service (much lower miles though). I had been smelling burning oil every now and then and mentioned it when I brought it for service last March. They said both sides were leaking and that both covers needed replacement. The gaskets I knew about but the covers too, that was a surprise. It does seem a bit strange to have plastic covers but they haven't leaked a drop since.

Plastic can never be a good thing under the hood. It can only weaken, crack, warp, and even melt. Its just another AoA cost saving technique. BMWs use alot of plastic, esp. in their cooling systems, and they all go to **** eventually..The cooling systems not the cars.lol

I cant see how they are using plastic covers for the valve covers. The engine gets quite warm under the hood. I would be afraid of that thing melting and warping as Miguel had stated.

The paint bubbles though, no question about it. Anyone refinished their valve covers in any superior way? Powder coating, maybe? I don't just want to paint it, I am bound to do a worse job than the original Audi.

What kind of a job is it to replace the gaskets DYI?

More sooner than later..their waterpump vanes are well known to explode and screw up the whole cooling system.

Just bought my 05 S4, and it came with the valve cover gasket leak on both heads, but the dealer is just recommending the gaskets. The parts should be in next week.

Yes,my indie just replaced the gaskets.I would refuse plastic valve covers no question. The tech was even kind enough to turn the valve covers upside down in the parts washer and put about a 1.5" gouge in the top of the left valve cover in the metal.... (see, bullet to the head).eyes roll....
No leak since some 4-5k later.
