I agree with you. A minimum of 10 MPH error and perhaps even 15 MPH is possible...
So if you saw 165 MPH it could be that you are only doing 150 MPH.

for all those that want a gps....here it is...there is no limiter...

Quite a bit. A car length per second difference if someone were racing you...
...and the difference between needing 250hp and 300hp to get there.
Of course, I've pulled away (by several car lengths) from Porsche 911's on a straight at a racetrack where I never got faster than 137mph on my B5 S4's speedo (which those with GPS have generally confirmed as being accurate), yet those same 911 drivers said they would get to 140-145mph as I was leaving them behind at 135-137mph. It sure makes me question the guys in 911 Turbos that say they would get to 155mph on that same straight. I doubt they topped 145mph in reality.

C&D reported 160mph as top speed, so you should have kept on going...
...that governer might have kicked in after another 2mph. 340hp in a B6 chassis should yield a maximum top speed of ~173mph if gearing's right, and I think it is.
