Audi of America, Inc. today announced that it will offer SIRIUS Satellite Radio as its exclusive satellite radio provider for Audi vehicles beginning with model year 2007 through 2012.
Previously, Audi offered both SIRIUS and XM satellite radio, but selected SIRIUS as its exclusive provider to reduce complexity in dealer ordering.
"We decided that the Audi customer demographic fit more closely with the type of content that SIRIUS Satellite radio provides," said Wolfgang Hoffmann, head of Audi Product Management. "And we believe that SIRIUS will continue to grow and create programming that our Audi customers will desire."
Today, the installation rate of satellite radio in Audi models is approximately 50 percent.
"We are very pleased that Audi will be offering SIRIUS exclusively beginning with the 2007 model year," said Mel Karmazin, CEO of SIRIUS. "We have had an excellent relationship with Audi as a non-exclusive partner during the past few years, and we are very pleased that they have decided to increase their commitment through this new, exclusive agreement. We look forward to working with them in the future to provide their customers with the most compelling in-vehicle entertainment available."

i wonder if older xm receiver boxes (made now) will work in future models
though really, i can't see why anyone would be that dedicated to either service, unless they're a stern fan *cough*

So that I can sell my XM box at a better price =)
I traded XM for Sirius, and still have the XM receiver at home. This way I may get a few more pennies on eBay =)

Someone at Audi got a BJ from making this deal happen
perhaps his name is Wolfgang
I've been in enough management meetings to know how this decision was made.

I would agree that being dedicated to one over the other does not make sense if they were equal
but XM has a big lead in the technology side
Content wise they appear similar except that Sirius has football and XM has baseball and Nascar (neither of which I listen too)

not just Audi, VW too....and your numbers are off, BTW.
I'm guessing because so many more new customers choose Sirius over XM, there was no point in continuing to offer it. People are leaving XM in droves...apparently, if you call to cancel your XM subscription, they will offer you a free radio and lower your monthly fee to $3.95/mo just to keep you. BTW, it was just announced last week that Sirius now has surpassed 4 million subscribers.
I think Sirius will overtake and probably acquire XM within the next 5 years.
