Default thanks for the Re: I try for 5k tops with synthetic on this engine and here is why

appreciate the detailed reply. i called my pal and told him to keep looking. personally, i go the 5k with all my own cars. it is added insurance for any car. i also remember talking to a mechanic once about the increase in the acidity of oil as it degrades. he felt that regardless of the mileage interval, he preferred that the oil was changed every 6 months. anyway, thanks a ton for all the quick and helpful replies.

5k I can understand....3k with synthetic and the large sump is overkill (IMHO)

Default It's not terrible but it is stupid if you plan to keep the car long

Look at how dirty the oil is at 5K

My oil is clean at 5k miles. Black oil does not mean dirty oil.

2nd. Under normal driving conditions, 3k is unnecessary with today's synthetic oils.

As long as the car is clean and inspects well, I wouldn't walk away just b/c of 10k oil intervals.

Default synthetic oil "looks" dirty almost instantaneously. You need to do an analysis to really see how

dirty it is. The B5 did some long term intervals and there was not much different that 5 and 10k. That being said I still go only 5K

Default I'm going to let the data drive my decision on this issue

I have two turbocharged 1.8T motors that require VW 502-approved oil at 5K OCIs. Those engines can run the oil temps up to 260-280F as measured in the pan with just a little bit of spirited driving, and they coke dino oils to the point that the oil pump screen clogs and there are oil starvation related fialures.

I doubt the 4.2 puts anywhere near the stress on oil that those engines do, so if I can I want to stretch the OCI on that engine out to 8-10K miles.
