Default Oil questions once again .....

Oil related questions have been seen here so many times but from running a search I cannot seem to find answers to the following;

1) Why are most people using Mobil 1 0W40 as opposed to Mobil 1 5W40?

2) Is there any previous posts showing a pole of which oil brand/grade is most favoured amoung B6 S4 owners? Why?

3) Is there truely a consensus of which oil is best for our engines?

I've been using Pentosin Sythetic 5W40 and I am due for an oil change thus I am looking for some pointers as to what I should be using in case there is better out there.

Any input, technical data, or real world experience would be greatly appreciated.

Default The only reason I use 0W-40 is because the theory is you want the thinnest possible oil when it's

cold, so that it coats the engine parts ASAP and the thickest possible oil when operating. So, the 0W-40 acts like a 0 viscosity when cold, and 40 viscosity when it reaches operating temperature. It's tough to create oils with such a spread, the greater the spread in the numbers, the more you'll pay.

Default One reason is there isn't a Mobil 5-40

Mobil 1 0W-40 meets or exceeds the following industry specifications:
0W-40
API SM/SL/SJ/CF X
ACEA A3/B3 X

Default According to Mobil 1, their 0W-40 is VW 502.00/505.00/503.01 approved but 5W-40 is not.

That's reason enough. Mobil 1 0W-40 is pretty easy to find too. Any fully synthetic that meets VW 502.00 is good and each will have its share of followers.

This topic has been discussed over and over, but you'll still only find a bunch of opinions. That's simply because there are a lot of very good motor oils on the market today. Stick with one that meets spec and you'll be fine. FWIW, I'm using Motul Specific 505.01/502.00/505.00 5W-40. It's been working well.

Yup, and it's one of Mobil's better oils, IMHO.

Default Use Castrol 5W40 Syntec and call it a day. Thats what Audi

recommends. Any synthetic 5W40 will do really. If you change your oil every 5k, it doesn't matter which major brand you use.

Default My manual specifically specifically state 0-40 but 5-40 can be used. I have always

just used 0w-40 as specified. There is much talk about one brand being better than another but as stated by another poster if you are changing every 5k and using synthetic I really don't think you are going to see any difference. One think my mechanic has always stated is that it is very rare to see an oil related engine failure and when they happen it is usually due to low oil or failure to regularly change.

I have always used Mobil 1, I do however use Rotella T synthetic in my boat.
