New to Audi and really want an 05 S4

Right on. Inspections can't always identify future problems.
"S4 in Margaritaville" made a value/business decision based on his circumstances, which is fine, but no means should that be the rule of thumb. I think his circumstances (and price disparity) are not common.

Paying for CPO is a waste of money in most cases.
Again, it has been discussed before.
Most of these people who love CPO's probably still have car payments on an '04, and think getting a tax refund back is a good thing.
(Psst, you want to owe nothing, and get nothing back if you are doing it right...)
It your money, feel free to waste it.

Yes, typically 3-4K. Not worth it IMO either.
But I do my own work.
If you don't do any work and want someone to do every little thing for you. It can be great hassle free way to drop it off and forget it.

I agree with you on the tax thing. Don't let RoadSportS4Avant see that, he will flip out. :)
And I agree that in SOME circumstances, paying for CPO is not worth it. But I disagree that such logic applies to most situations. I, and many others, have presented situations where it is a good choice.
The potential buyer needs to see how much more he'd be paying and decide. I would have done just like you in your situation, and I'm sure you would have done just like me in mine.
But now we are in 2009, where a CPO has much more value than it did back in 2005. If it's not much more, a CPO vehicle should get the edge regardless if an indy mechanic signs off on it.
All this is coming from the person who said self-insurance is best (see link). This is not a contradiction. CPO provides added benefits above and beyond the insurance protection.

https://forums.audiworld.com/s4b6/msgs/455237.phtml</a
