Looking for opinions on Oil vs. Synthetic and what brand to use
I'm just looking for some opinions as to what people prefer. Synthetic vs. Dino juice and what brands have people had the best experiences with, Mobil 1, etc. I popped into an indie mechanic last night and he said "please don't tell me that you are changing the oil every 10k miles as the dealer/manufacturer recommends". That took me aback a little. Ok, let's see what everyone thinks.

I change every 5,000 miles
Synthetic only. Audi requires VW 502 00 standard oil.
This is a frequently discussed topic. Try searching the archives.

Here's the latest list of oils that meet 502 00

Every 4k+ and Synthetic only.
Just did it using Petosin.
"Felt" Castrol was better than Mobil 1 (engine ran smoother, longer). Since I was placing an order with ECS, I orderd Petosin from them. Let's see how this one goes...

Audi REQUIRES dealers to use synthetic on 05 S4s and later.
Not for the 04s even though it has the same engine. Non synthetic is far inferior to synthetics. 3k miles between changes at most. IMHO, the synthetics can run on a 7,000-7500 mile change interval without compromising longevity of the engine. Stretching it to 10k might not be wise due to sludge buildup. Mobil 1 is a very good oil but others are as good if not better. I recall a past discussion that pointed out that some oils touted as "full synthetic" are not really 100% synthetic while others (Motul Amsoil and Royal Purple come to mind) are.

Audi approved oils

But for some stupid reason they dont on the '04s
I have a theory though. Since the '04s had thebetter warranty where oil changes were included, audi didnt want to pay for synthetic and put conventional in. Fcking bastards

Every 5k, two Mobil 1 5q jugs.
40 minutes, a filter, and the inevitable broken plastic belly pan pin later(at least Audi in general uses metal screws - my old sti was practically built of the little plastic b*stards), good to go.

Exactly. BMW pulls the same type of stunts.
Once they included maintenance, they shifted from 5k to 10k oil change intervals. And it wasn't because the oil got magically better.
