Is it just me or is the Distance-To-Empty feature completely useless on this car?

It was pretty accurate on my A4; I could get another 10-20 miles after it said 0.
However, the other day I got zero on my DTE display on the S4 and when I went to fill up I found that I had at least 2 gallons left in the tank. WTF - that's awfully pessimistic.

Mine hides 2 gallons when it says 0 miles to empty.
I figured it's because with a V8, that might mean I have 20 miles to find a gas station, which wouldn't be enough for some people that live in the boonies.

Even so...
Depending on state requirements a pump might not get checked often enough. Still, the discrepancies are not enough to make a significant volume difference in a small tank.

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/texassouthwest/stories/080107dntexgaspumps.cc6e62ae.html</a
