Default Burning Oil

Ok, it seems every 5K I need to add about 2 quarts of synthetic oil to my engine. Is this normal? I don't recall my V6 burning oil like this? The car has 40K on it.
Thanks in advance for your input!

Default Ok, now I know why people want to merge forums!

I would have received an answer or some smart *** remark of how dumb of a question this is in about 3 minutes if I had posted this on the B5 forum a few years ago.... Wow.

Apex, am not a mechanic, but FWIW can't imagine consuming 2L oil every 5k mi. There is a factory-acceptable limit for every engine design regarding engine oil consumption (usually 0-500cc range), and while i don't have a clue what it is for the 4.2L v8 - am dead certain it's not 2L. Would do as you suspect and have it checked up on, surely a cheaper fix now than waiting. Regards, sandcritter. p.s. agree, this board is slow.

Thanks! Apparently it is normal after talking to two mechanics...

2 quarts per 5k miles sounds about right for normal street driving. I track my car quite a bit an notice a little more oil consumption if I've been running it hard.

All of the 4.2's burn oil so the best plan is to keep a case on hand and check it at least monthly.

Wow, didn't know that. Have read of other audi engines using half-liter between changes being "normal" per audi, but 2L in 5k? Fortunately have not seen consumption like that, yet. Not that it's "wrong" apparently, but hard to get used to the idea. LOL - my old '85 saab 285,000mi, rung out to 5-6k rpm most days still didn't consume any measurable amt of oil! The S4 gets a couple firm runs each way to/from work daily, no track; will just have to continue keeping an eye on it. Thanks for the tip.

Default oil consumption

'06 S4 Avant that reliously consumes 1 quart per 1,000 miles. Has since hitting ~80,000miles now at ~110,000. Used about a quart per 5,000 before that with no need to add until about 50,000 miles. Car is amazing in every respect, but this is somewhat hard to accept as normal.

I guess it sounds like I still have the only B7 S4 that doesn't use oil. Never has. I definitly don't baby it either. Oh well.

Main reason there is so much traffic and attitude with B5 forum is because everyone is trying to mod their cars to get them to perform and getting pissy when their turbos blow up, and their car is in the garage in pieces...again. Not much modding needed/possible in the B6/B7 ranks so not much to talk about....just drive. A humorous explanation of course. ;-)
