sure (long)
I think you're doing what I did, researching the site and getting freaked by a rate that you expect to be crazy high. It wasn't so bad. I simply called the dealership and asked for the manager of the finance dept. I negotiated a little, and it was the end of the month. Figure I did better than some, and some have done better than me. Anyway:
Audi Pure Protection Platinum for 5 years/ 75K mi with zero deductible for $1923 total.
This plan suits me, I have my lease for one more year and will come close to the 75K mi mark.
The price varied with a few key terms: platinum, yrs/mi and deductible. 5/100 and 6/100 were obviously more, gold plans less etc.
I was quoted a $1573 base plus $350 of my fee went to the zero deductible plan. (I was initially quoted a higher base but asked for it to be lower as I was spending more for the zero deductible plan and the manager complied) Other alternatives quoted: $295 for a $50 "disappearing" deductible. That means that you pay a $50 deductible once per repair site. Didn't make any sense because once you pay it you're up to the zero deductible rate but pay an additional 50 anytime you go to another shop. I could have paid nothing over the base and had a $100 deductible per incident. Given my car's record, I'm gambling that it sees service at least 3 times and I don't want to be shy about bringing it in. But that's just it, in the end it's all gamble vs cost of piece of mind. Even with the plan stuff can break that isn't covered.
Oh, that's the other thing. The platinum is an "exclusionary" policy. That means that it states a negative account of what is not covered. Anything else not specifically named must be covered.

excellent! thanks for taking the time to post this
you're absolutely right about me getting freaked out, so I feel a lot better now!
I'm calling the dealer today, so if anyone's interested, I'll post how I get on.
Thanks again

In California, you pay sales tax on the trade-in
Having the previous owner sell to the dealer who then CPO's it and sells it to you is a good idea though -- wish I'd thought of that when I bought mine.
