A couple of years ago I realized I might want to keep my RS6 longer than originally expected. To keep it from adding 20K mi every year I began to get "auxiliary" vehicles. A Crossfire SRT6 started things off, but it sucks up gas too -- and the rear axle gives a punishing ride.
Now I have a Saturn Aura in Michigan. Purchased last year, it tops out at 28 mpg with 252 hp on tap -- about the same power as a B5 S4 but with better mpg. Very nice styling IMO, inside & out; looks pricier than it is. FWD, decent ride, handling OK but no track car. Comfortable and classy for a low-to-mid-20s car. German design, and engine, assembled in Kansas.
Down here I have a 2004 Pontiac Vibe. Sort of a small SV that gets 24 mpg city, 30 hwy, on regular. Converts easily to completely flat cargo floor that lets me nap on the road (I'm 5'10"). With black wheels complementing burnt orange paint, a supplementary amp and a sunroof, my Vibe actually draws some compliments. Cost $10K used and worth about $9500 some 30 months later. Made from the same special assembly line as the Toyota Matrix, the Vibe is GM's most reliable vehicle. Some laugh at my having a Vibe; I laugh all the way to the bank.
If I tire of the Vibe I might get a used Miata -- less practical but a lot more fun, especially in Florida. Also good mpg & cheap to fix.
