RS4 Owners who have previously owned BMW M Coupes
I find it pretty odd that many RS4 owners on this board have previously owned a BMW M Coupe considering the rarity of both cars. Seems very coincidental.
Let's start a count:

Previously Owned a 2001 Steel Grey M Coupe

Had a 2002 Carbon Black SMG
Hated it. But the new V8's seem much better.
I like driving cars you don't see a bunch of.
Funny that I have yet to see another RS4 Cab but my last car was a Maserati Spyder GT and I did see a couple of them

I'll let Tino chime in here since he still has both.
Stock for stock, I prefer the driving dynamics of the RS4, but the driver's position and interior ergonomics of the M5 were better for me, mainly due the increase in room (I'm 6'3 205) and a center armrest that's more integrated/designed for use with the stick. I really hate the RS4 center console design, and yes I know it's a B5/B7 carryover, but still for $70k it's a creaky piece of crap.
Seat of the pants the cars both pull hard. The M5 has what..50lbs more TQ (stock) but I can't feel any difference in the RS even with AWD hiding some of the power. It's definitely more nimble thanks to better steering, even with the engine hanging off the front end.
It's a great direct-replacement for the E39, and I think many people have made that choice on this board.
