Default Question about importing a B7 RS4 Avant to the USA

I know that someone imported a B5 RS4 into the states and allegedly paid about $100k to make it street legal here. I know a little about grey import motorcycles and from what I can tell most of the difficulty would have come with the B5 RS4 being a very different animal than the B5 S4. We already get the B7 RS4 sedan so there would be no need to EPA certify the engine and/or meet NA bumper crash standards since the sedan has already done all the work. I'm sure I'm missing something but it would seem to be a lot easier than getting the B5 RS4 here.

Default Search for JoshD. He did the B5 RS4. He'll tell you it's something you don't want to do.

From what I gather, it's just not worth the headache. Took him like 2 years or something absurd, I think.

Default Haven't done a full parts comparison to US and Euro spec A/S4 B7 Avant and RS4 Avant...

however there are quite a bit of things to change just from the top of my head. Bumpers (reflectors) and unfortunately the sedan and avant bumpers are different so the rear bumper isn't a swap, headlights, taillights, likely all the glass, bumper supports and rebar, possible seats and steering wheel, etc. Would have to have documents to prove the motor passes US reg or spend the money to have an importer prove it does, running the car in a dyno cell for quite a bit at your cost. Audi of Germany is not helpful in these cases for the most part, they will not hand over internal docs and when you petition they can argue against the petition which is made public.

It's not fun if you want to make it 100% legal. Many folks do not, they import under show, race, display, limited use, technical terms which is usually limited mileage and up to a 1 year limit.

Mind you I'd like an RS4 Avant as well, either B5 or B7.

Cheers,

Default As of March 8th, 2006 it is MUCH easier to legally import and federalize...

Default Really, did they give you any reasons?

I have heard of people that live in europe and move to the US, bring their cars with them and have no problem and vice versa.

Default That's diplomat/military sales. You get a US-spec car in that case and so importation is easy

at the end of your stay in europe.

Here's a perfect example of a military sales M3 that is US-spec, but features many modifications that are part of the Europe-only Individual Program:

Default The only RS4 listed in that document is the B5 and (more)

your date of March 8th, 2006 is simply the date of that copy of the Federal Regulations (FARs). The decision that allows importation of those cars (including the B5 RS4) was made on March 28th, 2003 and would simply be in all subsequent publications of the FARs.

This ruling does not allow importation of the B7 RS4

Default Right, i was just pointing out that its the same situation...

actually better situation as the B7 RS4 and B7 RS4 Avant are basically the same car as the much more complicated diferences between the B5 S4 and a B5 RS4.

Yeah, i wasn't sure about the date info as i found that through STFAing and others had refered to that date.

Default It's going to be costly and time consuming no matter how you do it. There are many differences

between US and EU spec including engine calibration differences.

You're at the mercy of the EPA to tell you what they want changed.

The cost of an RS4 Avant is over $100k alone. Import taxes in the US will cost you a bit plus shipping.

When it's all said and done, I'd guess you'd be $150k into it.
