Re: Coming from a Phaeton, you might consider an A8
Yep, my boss has the A8 -- I do prefer it over the phaeton looks-wise - but I paid $35K less for my car... Still, the A* is a BIG car - I just like the size of the A6 chassis.

Suitability of ride quality depends on roads you use
Ride quality works for me when I'm in Florida -- good roads there. But in SE Michigan, where many roads remain rough, the ride is a bit stiff for my aging body (I'm 62). And I recently ruined a tire after hitting a depression for a sewer top in a construction zone. Tire was a PS2, a fine piece of work that seemed immune to potholes that were worse, but what happened happened.
What do you drive now? If it's another performance car with firm suspension, you should be fine. And if roads are good where you are, that should work too. But if "no" to either or both of those, you might want to find some rough pavement and try before you buy.

That's the whole point of this car...
4 door practicality.
Lots of low end torque so that merging and passing are stress-free affairs.
AWD for all weather.
Discreet appearance won't attract unwanted attention.
And a whole lot of fun when the road opens...

Re: RS6 as a daily driver?
OK, you've convinced me... Now I am searching for a lower mileage car than the one I have seen (about 50k miles) to sway me towards writing the big check. The one I am considering is very clean and is certified, but I would rather have less mileage if possible.
BTW, how is insurance on these things? Ridiculous, or OK as they are 4 year old cars?

Don't worry about mileage.
You get a better price for higher mileage and no increase in problems. The cars are just like any other modern car; good for 200k if you drive it regularly and maintain it properly. Low mileage cars may actually be less reliable, because they sit for extended periods or only get short trips.
Insurance is what you'd expect for a four door Audi.
