Feedback needed from people who have powdercoated wheels before.
I'm getting my summer wheels powdercoated next week at Applied Plastics. Is it worth paying extra $ for the clearcoat or 2nd coat? I'm just concerned about how that base coat will hold up (rock chipping).

Had mine done at AP before the winter started and haven't had any chip or scratches. Knock on wood.
They do a great job and would probably honor any work that was damaged, within reason I assume.

If you're getting them done in silver,
then I believe clear coat is required. Also, get the matte or semi-gloss finish with silver. The high gloss just looks wrong and makes the silver appear dark. One more thing about silver at AP, if you want a really bright silver that is similar to the color on the OEM wheels, you may need to go with a custom color. All of the ones they have in stock are a bit dark IMO.

In that case,
I'm really not sure if clear coat is required or not, but I don't believe so. The people at AP should tell you up front. If clear coat is necessary and if it was my car, I'd still go with a matte finish. Just my personal preference.
