Depends on whether you are interested in any of the known mods or if you want to explore.

About having to own an android check out the following thread -> OBDEleven on a Windows laptop/non android device | OBDeleven

I have not tried running it on a PC, but I'm interested and might give it a shot this weekend.

oh I want the mods!
and I don't own a windows laptop

I'm sure I can find a cheap android device

I don't want to go through the headache if it's not working well on the new Q7

to confirm, the build date is on top of the silver sticker on frame between the left side doors 10/16

Apart from the issue Andy had recently, it works well.

What mods are you thinking of doing?

Even with the cost of a cheap android device it's not an expensive outlay.

Is it easier to use a windows laptop or an android tablet? I tried using the tablet and while my tablet found the OBD device and accepted the code it would not connect to the tablet. Ugh.

I would say android tablet as the windows laptop is running an android emulator which would add another layer of complexity in my book. Potentially cheaper though.

I just ordered a basic Samsung tablet with Android 4.4 ( I think minimum version is 4.1).

Did the tablet have a solid internet connection? The OBD11 app will not function without an internet connection.

Was the OBD11 dongle plugged into the OBD port, the ignition turned on and the engine not running?

Full WIFI connection from my house while in my garage. I tried both Ignition on and running, unplugged the dongle and plugged it back in numerous times, rebooted tablet a few times, spent 45 minutes and got frustrated and gave up. I'll probably give it another go tomorrow. The tablet found the dongle, I put in the 1234 code and tried to "connect" multiple times, it would say something like "no device found" or something like that.

Did you try going to Bluetooth under settings in your tablet and pairing OBDeleven using 1234? After that, check it via the app.
