I pull my Airstream 19 (~4,000 lbs) with a 2018 Q7 PP 3.0T non-air-suspension. I use an Equal-i-zer WDH with 400 lb bars and it levels out perfectly. I keep an eye on mounting bolts, but it appear fine so far. Frankly, the Q7 works fine with just a simple ball mount on a short shank, but can sway a bit more than I like.

My google skills seem to indicate the only reason why VAG forbids its use is that WDH are illegal in Germany, and they dont want to do SAE testing in the USA. I keep on seeing people post about failures, and causing damage, but i havent actually found the source of these claims. Can anyone point me to actual evidence of a WDH causing damage and/or failures?

I think that is going to be tricky without air suspension unless you install airbags in the rear shocks, or go against recommendation and use a WDH... Most people with travel trailers end up near the trailer's GVWR by the time they are ready to travel and have accumulated stuff over time. assume you will be close to 7000 pounds. You want at LEAST 10% of the weight on the hitch, so you need 700 lb hitch weight minimum. More would be better. In other words you will be at the max 770 lbs, which is going to cause a lot of rear-end sag unless you do something to hold that rear end up (air bags or WDH). If you run less than 700 lbs on the tongue, you will be at risk for sway issues.
In regards to your original question, towing with a riser hitch/ball "out of Audi spec" likely puts more strain on the hitch, which may be a bigger issue since you will be running near max weight. If you are towing with the trailer several inches too low in the front, that is not good as it will shift even more weight to the hitch. If your trailer will be tandem axle, it is even more important for it to be fairly level. Their specs are kind of ridiculous because it is rare for larger trailers to run that low to the ground, at least here in the U.S.

I thought anit sway and WDH are different functions. Can anti sway be installed without WDH?
