What is that noise when you open the driver door?

What is that noise when you open the driver door?
I've always wondered and I just did a quick search but couldn't find anything. Just for clarity, when you open the front door, there is an odd buzz. What is that for?

I posted that question last year - strong concensus was fuel pump...
Doesn't make sense to me b/c hear it if you open any door, (why pump fuel if I just need to grab something out of the back?) but what do I know...

again, I'm not sure exactly what noise the OP is talking about, but I
only hear the fuel pump when I open the driver's door. My A4, A3, Touareg and Jetta all make/made similar noises and only when the driver's door is opened.

So the fuel pump is somewhere around the driver's seat?
That's where the sound seems to emanate from. Aren't most pumps in the tank or very close to it? (Yes, I have this sound too and have been wondering about it as well.)
