The question you are asking makes me concerned that you are about to carry out a task which my be a little ambitious for your level of skill.

To turn the crank, you can put a socket on the bolt in the centre of the front pulley. You will need to use a rigid bar not a ratchet, in our to stop the crank in each position you want.

I do recommend getting further advice before doing this work though!

I will follow your advise, do I have to jack up the car?

What kind of car? If you can get to the crank pulley without putting the radiator in the service position then no jack needed but I'm guessing you got some work to do before you can get to the crank. Go by a service book from any auto part store. Chilton, Haynes service manual. Prob 25-30 bucks. Best but ever if you plan on doin any work on your own.

I can access the cranshaft easily, guess no need to touch the radiator, right?

I had Audi service cd, it doesn't say how to crank by hand.

Yea if you can get to it without removing anything just stick a socket on there and crank away till you get it to where ya want.

I am about to do the same thing on my 3.6 which the crank is easily accessible, are you planning on making a DIY? I plan on also doing my coils and spark plugs while I am there.

Yes, to clean every intake manifold valve, I have to rotate the cranshaft by hand.
