I know that the proper size is: 285/35-22 for correct speedometer readings, but tire/wheel shop suggested the 265/40-22 as an alternative for a bit more cushioning and preventing wheel bends from potholes and such.

Anyone here try out both tire sizes and can give experience if the 285/35-22 (with its smaller sidewall) will give a bit of a harsher ride over the 265/40-22?

The speedometer difference won't bother me as much since I'd be replacing all 4 tires.

265 is going to look stupid! All the other records I can find (from the forum) of 22" have used 285/35/22.
If you are worried about the ride then why not 285 or 295 on 21"

Cost of 21" is outrageous as compared to the 20" and 22" tires. Since the Q7 is the family transporter, I didn't want to introduce a 'harsher ride' by going from a 20" 45 series tire to a 22" 35 series tire. The 40 series tire would also provide a bit more cushion to absorb potholes to lessen the potential of wheel bends as well.

Wheel shop told me that they've mounted the 265/40-22's on other Q7's with no issues.

Would it look "stupid" because the tires would be too narrow for the 22x10 wheel? I'm just gathering info right now so that I can make the proper tire choice.
