My lid also slaps open. This also happened on my D3 and there was a little plastic pinion cog than ran along a curved toothed 'rack' as the lid opened and maybe some kind of friction slowed it down. The plastic teeth would come off and one could purchase a CNC made pinion cog from a user on another forum. I wonder if the D4 is similar.
